Győr, 24 June 2014 – Győr is an outstanding city of Hungarian sports, boasting of exceptional sporting successes. The city government and AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft. have been fruitfully cooperating in a variety of areas: they are both committed to supporting sport, culture and the young generation. Zsolt Borkai, mayor of Győr, and Thomas Faustmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria, jointly announced today that the new multifunctional hall will be called Audi Arena Győr. The new hall will host the 2014 European Women's Handball Championship.
"Győr is home to active cultural and sports life, and the Audi Arena Győr will be a worthy place to accommodate these activities," said the mayor of Győr, Zsolt Borkai. "With the completion of the new hall - thanks to the almost 5 billion HUF support of the Hungarian government - the old dream of the people of Győr and the handball girls who won the Champion's League becomes a reality. The building will be one of the locations of the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2017. We’re trying to shift the generation of the future towards health consciousness and an active lifestyle - for this, local role models, successes and compelling surroundings are necessary that this hall will be capable of providing. Besides sports, the new multifunctional hall will also be a centre of culture, further promoting our city and expanding our opportunities, and I do hope that it will bring good luck to the Hungarian handball girls at the handball European Championship in December. I’m glad that the city of Győr and Audi have such a history of unbroken development and partnership - strengthening each other - and I am confident that we’ll have countless happy and unforgettable moments in the Audi Arena Győr."
"We are very happy indeed that the city of Győr has been enriched with such a fine establishment, and we are proud that Audi Hungaria as sponsor of the cultural and sports life of the city will provide the name for the hall for the next 10 years as part of a long-term commitment," said Thomas Faustmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria. The Audi Arena Győr will set in motion high-level sporting and cultural events that will entertain our workers, the inhabitants of the city and visitors alike."
The cornerstone of the Audi Arena Győr was laid in January 2014. The construction is proceeding according to the plans and the impressive building already has its roof. The sport arena seats 5,500 spectators and will provide new home for the successful sports of Győr like handball, basketball and futsal and will be the location of countless international sporting and cultural events. After the name of the hall was announced, an inaugural bouquet was ceremoniously affixed to the new arena during the ceremony. The representatives of the local success teams were present along with the young talents of the succession associations of the city.
In the spirit of social responsibility and as the largest employer of the region, Audi Hungaria has been an active supporter of the cultural and sport life of Győr.
By purchasing the right to use the name of the hall, the company contributes to the operational costs of the Audi Arena Győr.
Since 2006 Audi Hungaria has been the main sponsor of the double Champions League winner Győr Audi ETO women’s handball team. It has been a partner of the Győr ETO FC football team since 2011.
